Community consultation open for Mercury Baypark Arena Extension Project

Manawa Trust (formerly TECT Community Trust) Trustees have agreed in principle to contribute up to $15 million towards the Mercury Baypark Arena Extension Project. Before making a final decision, Manawa Trust are inviting the community to share their views on the proposal.

The proposed contribution would support a six-court expansion of the Arena, creating a larger indoor facility for the growing Western Bay of Plenty region.

Mercury Baypark Arena is already well used by residents and visitors. The extension aims to help address the region’s growing shortage of indoor sports facilities and provide more room for regular community use and larger events.

Manawa Trust was an early supporter of the arena, approving a $6 million grant towards its construction in 2009. Since opening in 2011, the nine-court venue has supported everything from local recreation to major sporting fixtures, conferences, exhibitions and live shows. The proposed extension could build on that role by increasing court capacity and widening the range and scale of activities the arena could accommodate. This information is provided to help the community consider the proposal; feedback both for and against the proposed contribution is welcomed.

As part of the decision-making process, Manawa Trust is seeking feedback from local residents, community groups, organisations and stakeholders across the region. Community submissions are now open and will help Trustees decide whether to confirm the proposed contribution.

People can learn more about the project and make a submission online at www.manawatrust.nz/arena-extension/. Feedback is open until 4:00pm on Monday 19 October.

Manawa Trust Chief Executive Officer Wayne Werder said community feedback is an important part of any significant funding decision.

"The Mercury Baypark Arena Extension Project has the potential to expand opportunities for sport, attract major events, and enhance the region's ability to host concerts, exhibitions and community gatherings. Before any decision is made, we want to understand how our community feels about the proposal and its potential benefits for the region."
